Woman of Valour

Studio One Toi Tū, January-February 2020

Approached from religious iconography visual language; this series of colourful, delicate and detailed collage works rejects the biblical expectations where females are measured in relation to their husband and/or God.

Meanings begin to morph as Azoulay—an Aotearoa/Middle Eastern-based artist—layers references from historical eras, diverse cultures, and elements of well-known art.

Engaging and dramatic works with a contemporary mindset that embraces equity and addresses cultural gender imbalances. Where the subjects stand on their own, please themselves and seek approval from no one.
