Tehlor II

This portrait challenges the traditional Eurocentric depiction of ethnic women as submissive and pleasing, instead portraying a powerful and independent woman who does not seek the viewer's approval.

Drawing on my own cultural heritage, my goal is to create a more nuanced depiction that showcases our complexity and depth. I aim to spark a conversation about representation and empowerment and inspire viewers to embrace their strength and agency.

Finalist at the National Contemporary Art Award, Waikato Museum, 2023.
